Zach, I read your “Day One” post again, and this one. I think I’m slow, and missed something. Probably an obvious thing in the context that I hadn’t noticed before the post. It’s okay, I’m used to that. BUT, I figured out some important things: Your world has been rocked, and you’ve taken up proverbial arms against a percieved enemy. Your end goal is to make this country great, and to convince people of such. You also have people that feel you are a SIXHRIB. Well, I’ve been fooled before, but I want to go on record as saying that I, for one, do NOT believe you to have six ‘H’ ribs! But seriously, I don’t think you fit those labels in that odd acronym. FlagShip has published stories that, were you phobic of those myriad topics, you would have censored, quashed, redacted, edited into a pool of red correction fluid, or just plain vetoed.
You’re a good man, Char– Zach. I’m in an odd mood, but I’m still with you, behind you, beside you, or wherever seems best and least creepy, if you’re actually visualizing it.

I’m with you man. I don’t know where I stand on the political spectrum, I tend to wander. But as a person who wants our country to be great, I’m with you.

I saw a meme posted that said something like, “I’ll forgive you for having a closed mind, if you’ll forgive me for having an open one.”

Once we have decided our minds our open and others are not, we have closed our minds to the possibility that they may be correct.

Awesome… I had some thoughts that were similar. It occured to me, thinking of my dad & what he did in the Phillipines, that here in my own country, I was going to have to be a freedom fighter & hopefully it doesn’t have to be underground!

No, I don’t think Zach is literally gunning for anyone. Speaking as someone who’s a friend (on the side of this “enemy”) I can say that I don’t relish the notion of Zach viewing the situation as a battle or an occasion for him to don the black hat. There are sides here, sure. I believe that we can respectfully and lovingly air our opinions, but that’s not what I’m talking about> I’m not saying that one side has to convince the other. I’m saying that we both need to be willing to bend.

Saying “I am not willing to compromise my XXXXX principals or values” is not part of the solution and it’s nothing new. What would be new is saying “I AM willing to come to a compromise if that means I give and get and you give and get.”

It seems to me, far too often, compromise is used as a nice way of saying, ‘No. You should do it my way.’ I am not willing to compromise my conservative principals or values. Just not going to do it. And you may not see people that disagree with you as the enemy, but far too many people do. And if we’re all honest here, I can love people that disagree with me all day long and it doesn’t make them agree with me anymore or like me anymore than they did before. I don’t think that Zach is grabbing a gun and going out on the hunt for his enemies. I think it just changes they way you chose to interact with other people. Perhaps it’s time to stop treating them with kid gloves, time to stop trying to love them over to your point of view. Perhaps, it’s time to stop trying to change their minds at all.

Here’s the thing. When it comes to religion things are a little more black and white. Either you’re right in your beliefs or I’m right in mine (or we’re both wrong which is what I’m betting on). These are the things that cause religious wars, but that I can understand on some level. Even then though, we don’t have to be enemies.

When it comes to politics, so long as we’re both Americans, we’re not enemies. This is not a war, holy or otherwise. In war you don’t compromise. In politics, you have to. We should be working together as a team towards a common goal.

“I have never felt that those who didn’t agree with me were enemies. But apparently, that’s how they view and describe me.”

Anyone that views you as an enemy Zach is misguided. We don’t agree on many things, but I call you my friend and my brother. Viewing those you disagree with as enemies? That’s how we got into the mess we’re in.

A month ago I would have agreed with you.
Three days ago, I would have been right there with you.
You’ll catch more flies with honey and all that.
Today… My viewpoint on this has shifted somewhat. I’ll have to think about this and I’ll have more to say about it tomorrow, I think.
